Rockdale Reads: Invisible Son (Book Recommendation)

Rockdale Reads: Invisible Son (Book Recommendation)

With Bookstagram, BookTube, and BookTok taking the publishing industry by storm, the Scribes & Vibes Youth Advisory Council (YAC) took to "The Gram" to serve up book recs, reader's advisory, and read-alikes. To broaden the scope of leadership among teenagers in Rockdale County, the passionate young professionals launched Rockdale Reads as a dedicated space for Rockdale students and residents to discover books and find community.

Poised with a mission to celebrate the joy of reading and prevent childhood bullying, the literature-based advocacy campaign kicked off with a quote from Dr. Jerrie Cobb Scott, founder of the African American Read-In. Holding true to the "It is important for all of us to see ourselves in books" quote, the YAC-led Recommended Reads promotion premiered with a realistic fiction book recommendation.

The Rockdale Reads YA team recommended Invisible Son by Kim Johnson and four read-alikes in an effort to display what it is to be Young, Stereotyped, and Black while living in America. If this compelling debut of the power of the humanities as means to foster empathy, understanding, and compassion is any indication of what is to come from the young changemakers, we cannot wait to see what else Rockdale Reads has in store.

For those of you that have not joined the @rockdalereads Bookstagram Community thus far, the December 6, 2023 IG caption recap is listed below:
